411movies Interview: Kevin McKeever from Robotech
Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 10.06.2007

At the Anime Bento Film Festival, The Vile One catches up with the production/marketing rep. at a screening of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles to talk about the next animated movie sequel and the upcoming live action movie!

On September 19th, The Anime Bento Film Festival sponsored by Fathom Events/National Cinemedia began delivering one of the largest releases of anime on big screen theatres in North America of all time. The movies were shown in hi-definition, and fans would be given a chance to see anime that had already been released on the big screen with top quality picture and sound. Plus some bonus extras.

On the 9/19 screening at AMC Century City 15, I caught up to Kevin McKeever from Harmony Gold, representing the company for a screening of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles.

Jeffrey "The Vile One" Harris: I'm speaking with Kevin McKeever, marketing and production rep for Robotech for Harmony Gold. Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles is screening tonight AMC Century City 15. Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles is the long awaited sequel to Robotech, over 20 years in the making. It's great to see Robotech—

Kevin McKeever: Yeah it's great to have Robotech on the big screen, particularly the Shadow Chronicles which is so great because Shadow Chronicles first started out as a direct-to-DVD OVA, and it sort of evolved into this sort of feature film which kind of nice. And now we had an earlier theatrical run earlier this year and here we are, September, almost a full 8 months after the movie came out on DVD. And here we are doing this big re-release across the country right now. I think it's just wonderful. It's a really great time to be a Robotech fan.

TVO: Mazel Tov. Do you work for Harmony Gold?

KM: Yes. I work for Harmony Gold, I do production and marketing for them. Despite the title, I'm actually pretty low-level.

TVO: How did you get involved with Robotech and when did that start?

KM: Well it started in 2004. I contacted Harmony Gold, I said, "Look, I'm Kevin McKeever. I work in the film industry. I've done live action films. I've done reality programming. I think I can be of some use to you. Here's my resume, I'll work any cost, I'd love to work for you." And sure enough, Alan West, who was then VP of business development said, "Sure, Kevin, why don't you come on over and let's see what you can do." I was in the right place at the right time, I was able to get the job, that was great.

TVO: Were you always a fan of Robotech before then?

KM: Yeah, I found it in 1985 by accident. I was looking for an episode of Vehicle Team Voltron – Yes I know – then I turned it on channel 61 in Hartford Connecticut and it said stay tuned for this new show called Robotech. And sure enough it was the very first episode called Booby Trap. And I still can remember it was a cloudy day in 1985, it was 8:30 in the morning and sure enough the shadow of Macross Island came up and the Narrator said "In the year 1999, high across Macross Island" and I was hooked from right then and there.

TVO: Robotech has actually been in the news lately. There was a report of a certain person who was in a certain group of movies wanting to produce a live action series of Robotech movies.

KM: Well first off let me say, there's a certain studio called Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to produce a live action Robotech movie. Now that certain person who you refer to is named Tobey Maguire –

TVO: Who? I've never heard of him.

KM: *laughs* Well that certain person is named Tobey Maguire and Tobey Maguire is interested in producing a Robotech movie and we're real excited that the deal is done. Great to be able to work with Warner Bros. and Tobey. It's a great thing for Robotech and it's fans that we'll be able to bring Robotech to that next level.

TVO: Whoever this Tobey Maguire person is, I think he would make a dynamite Max Sterling.

KM: I'm not at liberty to comment on casting right now. But you have a good point, to talk about this a little bit more because a lot of people are saying, "Oh they are going to do this, or do that." Folks, it's really early in the process. I can't emphasize this enough. We're quite literally at the first frame of a three hour movie. That's how early we are in the process, you know a script hasn't been written yet, all that's happened is that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to Robotech. You know we haven't talked about casting we really haven't talked about anything else beyond that yet because we just started the process, so who will be cast in it? I got to be honest, I don't know. What's it going to be about? To be honest with you, I don't know, the script isn't written yet.

TVO: Can you talk about at all how this deal came together and was it a mutual agreement?

KM: Well yeah it came together in 2004 when I arrived at Harmony Gold. There was interest in the live action feature film rights for a variety of people. Some well know, some independent. And as the years went on the interest in Robotech increased to the point where Warner Bros ended up contacting us. They contacted us unsolicited. And they made an offer for Robotech, we thought it was a great offer and we were able to work out a deal. It's actually a lot more complex than that, but that's pretty much the base story.

TVO: I can only imagine Mr. Maguire was a fan himself and at his age when the show came on was probably a part of the core audience and is a big fan as well.

KM: He's a fan, they're all excited about working on Robotech. You know Tommy [Yune, the director of Shadow Chronicles] went over to the Warner Bros lot, you know Tommy our creative director, and they're all excited about Robotech. They're all talking about Rick Hunter and Minmay – they're excited about Robotech. I can't quite describe it to you, but it goes beyond just "Oh this could be successful," it's like "Wow, we're working about Robotech! This is great!"

TVO: Robotech over the years has grown a significant, some might call it a cult fan base. But keeping that in mind do you think there's a market out there to make this a big budget Hollywood movie?

KM: I think so. I mean they made Transformers into a big budget movie. I mean it did very well. You could easily make a live action Robotech, and I think the live action and animation can exist side by side and be very successful. It's a question of making a good movie. It's not if you can make a big budget movie but a good movie. A good movie, people will show up. A bad movie, it doesn't matter what the material is, it's a bad movie, no one's going to care.

TVO: People cared about Transformers.

KM: I liked Transformers, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I'm a huge generation one fan.

TVO: That's fine. It was also reported on Anime Insider that Harmony Gold is now producing the sequel to Shadow Chronicles, can you comment on that at all?

KM: Not other than what's been said previously. I just can't comment on that right now. Believe it or not Shadow Chronicles there's still a lot of foreign territories it has to be released in. Tomorrow in China actually right now in China if you look at the time difference, Shadow Chronicles is just coming out on DVD today in China just to give you an idea of what foreign territories have yet to see Shadow Chronicles. So we have to get it out to the masses for first Shadow Chronicles and then we can start looking forward more toward the sequel.

TVO: Was there a rush to get this out on DVD with all the delays?

KM: We originally had a release date of November 21st, but we said look we're not going to be able to get it into a lot of stores if we do November 21st, we won't be able to do a theatrical run you know and we won't be able to market the film properly. Let's take our time and push it back a few months till February so we can have the proper time. We purposefully delayed it so we can do more, we can reach more Robotech fans. We were able to do that. Interesting the sales were just phenomenal. Funimation's amazed. We're amazed. It keeps on just selling, and selling, and selling. Here we are the first 8 months after it came out and it's still selling really well. So Funimation came out and said let's make a special edition DVD. Because the demand is there. You have to have a certain level of demand for a special edition of DVD otherwise they'd be made all the time. Some movies don't make special edition . . . it wasn't a rush to bring it out, it was let's bring it out the right way.

TVO: I thought the prequel comic to Shadow Chronicles was excellent. Is there any interest to do another comic story to fill in the blanks for the next movie?

KM: There is interest, however you have to look at it in the overall context of the comic book industry which is in a severe contraction right now. So it's not just Robotech, it's everybody . . . So the question is will it be profitable, will there be enough people to do it? We're exploring other ways to bring comics as well. Tommy Yune's better to answer that question because he knows the comic book industry very well. I just read them *laughs* . . . The interesting thing about the comic is that it had a very small print run and it sold out everywhere. It's very difficult to find those comics now because everyone snatched them up so quickly because the print run was so small.

TVO: Make a collected volume.

KM: I know, you want to make a collected one, but that's up to DC Comics right now.

TVO: Does Harmony Gold have any creative control with the live action movie project?

KM: We have a creative say. Filmmaking's a collaborative issue . . . we work under an agreement where we have our say. Tommy went over to Warner Bros. because he's going to be our creative pointman on this because he's the creative director of Harmony Gold . . . because it's so early there's not a lot to say right now, but as we move forward there will be more.

TVO: Is Tommy Yune planning on directing the next Robotech animated movie?

KM: Yes . . . he's the creative director it's his responsibility to guide these projects through on a creative end. So I can't talk about other crew right now because a lot of stuff is still being worked out internally with Harmony Gold. Once again Harmony Gold is very committed to Robotech, and Robotech is here to stay.

TVO: What do you see of the state of Robotech right now and where do you seeing it go in the future?

KM: The state of Robotech right now is actually very good. I remember where Robotech was in this hybernative state not that long ago . . . look at what's happened in the past year. Robotech's been at film festivals. It's had a theatrical run. It had a DVD release. We're sitting here with the second theatrical release in hi-definition, the largest release of hi-definition anime ever in North America. Robotech's a part of that too. Two years ago, people weren't thinking that. They were thinking maybe it would come out on DVD. Look at where Robotech was and where it is now. You can see just the great progress that was made.

TVO: I think purist fans really owe Robotech for Macross being revived in the United States. Being totally re-released in it's original form on DVD, I don't think that would've ever happened without the resurgence of popularity with Robotech.

KM: Originally Harmony Gold was going to release Macross with an English dub. There was a pilot made with the first three episodes and it was going to be released direct-to-video type of thing and had that happened we would not be here having this conversation. I don't think there would've been that great anime boom that came after Robotech. So because we combined these three series we opened the door saying look you can make anime for adults, people will watch it, and yes you can make money on it.

TVO: But now fans have the choice now to watch Macross.

KM: Right we have the choice, now you can watch Macross, you can watch it's original Japanese dub, you can watch Robotech, and now you can watch Macross in an English dub. It's sometimes lost in the shuffle but you have the ADV English dub you have Vic [Mignogna, the voice of Hikaru Ichijo in Macross or Rick Hunter from Robotech for Robotech fans]—

TVO: Mari Ijima, the original Japanese voice actress for Minmay.

KM: The original voice actress for Minmay. Matt Greenfield [English ADR director for Macross] putting that together. We now have that, in part because the market expanded. So there's places now for the Macross dub and the Macross original, and for Robotech as well. When you expand the market, there's more opportunities for obscure options for anime like a Macross dub or Macross on DVD—

TVO: Or a Robotech theatrical run, even if it's limited.

KM: Oh yeah. It's a good thing. And National Cinemedia, if this is successful, they want to do this every year. And not just Robotech, but other anime as well in hi-definition at a theatre near you. I mean that's great.

TVO: Thank you so much.

KM: Thank you for having me, I enjoyed the interview.

TVO: Thank you sir.

KM: Thank you.
